Questions

Person A: Mom of individual with mental illness
Person B: Brother of Individual with mental illness
Person C: Individual with mental illness

How would you define mental illness?
Person A: When someone gets an emotional problem or like a thinking problem that makes it hard for them to live life.
Person C: Yeah I think it feels different, like it’s not something you get, it’s something that you always have.
Would you say that your family has experienced mental illness?
Person C: I have bipolar and sometimes psychosis, mostly when I’m, what’s the word?
Person A: Manic.
Person C: Yeah manic. I like how you say that though because even though I am the one with the diagnosis my whole family is a part of it too. That’s a good way of seeing it.
Person B: Yeah because it is a part of all of our lives.
What has been the most challenging part?
Person A: The beginning.
Person B: Yeah.
Person A: We are Mexican and in our culture mental illness doesn’t exist like it does here. Even though I have lived here since I was small. I guess we just don’t view it the same. I felt like she (person C) was just making it up or just needing extra attention.
Person C: Yeah it was really difficult because I always knew something was wrong I just thought it was a phase. When it got really bad and it stopped me from doing everything and I felt like no one was listening. But once my mom finally got me help, things got much better.
Person B: Once I saw that the medications actually helped and she was a lot more stable. I know for me I realized that maybe she was really sick. I know my mom and I felt guilty but things are a lot better now.
Person A: We are able to understand a lot more now, and we know how to handle things.
Has your family been changed because of this experience?
Person B: We are closer now.
Person A: I think before we all wanted to look perfect to each other. It has brought out all our flaws. I think we are more comfortable with each other now.
Person C: Exactly I feel like I can be myself.
Person A: We are good at making sure everyone is doing ok now.
How long do you think it took you to where you are now?
Person B: I think it took me the longest. Maybe 6 months. I kept expecting it to go back to the way it was with everyone stressed. Sometimes when she needs (person C) her meds adjusted or she’s stressed it’s a little challenging but we’ve gotten good at it.
Person A: Not long I think she got pretty stable in like a month. Once that happened everything else fell it to place. It changed the way we see mental illness which help. It’s not perfect and we are always working on things but that’s how it is no matter what.
Person C: Yeah whether you’re mentally ill or not (laughs). Therapy has helped a lot. We do family therapy too not just me. So we know how to explain our feelings and understand where everyone is coming from.
Is there anything else you feel like I should know?
Person C: I feel like the stigma around mental illness needs to be reduced so that more people can get help sooner. It would have helped me.
Person B: Yeah there is a lot of support out there, I was really surprised.
Person A: You can feel connected, sometimes it can feel very lonely but it’s not. You just have to get better about talking about things even if it’s hard. I feel no more shame. I feel strong.
Person C: Exactly.
