FAITH AND THE BIBLE

FAITH AND THE BIBLE

Please write a 10-12 sentence answer for each question (include personal opinions as requested in the

question):

Chapter 6:   Faith
Chapter 4:   The Bible

Also, read the gospel of Mark in the New Testament before you read Chapter 4 in Christian Foundations.  Then

read another synoptic gospel (Matthew or Luke) after you read CH. 4 in the text.  Perhaps then you will get

a feel for the different agendas/styles/emphases of the writers of these texts.  You will then be able to

see where Matthew or Luke differs from Mark (using the “Q” source or their own information), and also where

they more or less copied directly from Mark’s work.  Yes, there was some early plagiarism here!!!

Try to read the New Revised Standard Version (NRSV) of the New Testament; it is the most accurate

translation of the original Greek.  You can access the text of the Bible in many places online.  If you have

trouble finding the NT texts email me and I can give you some help.

There are only two Discussion Board questions for this week.   That is because I will be asking further

detailed questions on the biblical material within the midterm.  Here are this week’s questions:

1)  What is the relationship between faith and belief and faith and theology? Summarize Fowler’s stages of

faith. Do you personally find yourself identifying with any of these stages? If not, why? If so, which

one/s?

2)   I want you to consider that while Jewish and Christian believers see the Bible as inspired by God and

as a means of revelation, it also is a human document.  So what are we to make of the cultural contexts

within which the Bible was put together, and the literary forms it uses to express religious truth?

Granted, we could do a whole course just on this issue as it is debated amongst Jews, Christians, and non-

Christians alike.

Why are the issues of inspiration and inerrancy so volatile for many Christians as they seek to interpret

the meaning of the Bible?   What is your personal view about biblical interpretation? There are no “right”

or “wrong” answers here … I simply want to spark some discussion.
