Expository Essay on Language and Communication

The primary goal of an expository essay is to deliver information about an issue, subject, method, or idea. This means that expository writing is designed to explain a topic. It often gives facts, explains ideas, or defines conditions. Whether it’s giving directions or explaining how to accomplish something, an expository piece is helpful because it provides the reader with deeper insights into a subject.

Using the Ted Talks by Pagel, Ryan, MacWhorter and the film Lost in Translation as references to support your viewpoints and reasoning, draw parallels, explain and/or take a specific standpoint. The essay should be between 600 – 800 words in length.

Pick one of the following topic prompts to write an expository essay on:

·        Explain what language and communication mean to you and why these two aspects are important for humanity or societal development.

·        Compare and contrast language and communication. What are the similarities or differences between the two?

The guidelines for a structured expository text are as follows:

Paragraph # 1- This is your introduction. Begin with a good “grabber.”

State the topic and define it.
State three explanations or examples.
Conclude with a transition sentence that leads into the next paragraph.
Paragraph # 2, Paragraph #3 and Paragraph #4 – These paragraphs are the body of your essay.

Use a transition at the beginning of each paragraph.
In each paragraph you develop one of your arguments, points, or explanations as fully as you can, restating the explanation and then expanding on it with examples or evidence that supports it.
These are the paragraphs where it is important to use spectacular vocabulary to show a good knowledge of words.
Paragraph # 5 – This is your conclusion.

Restate your topic in words that are different from those in paragraph 1. Vary the phrasing of your topic sentence.
Summarize paragraphs #2, #3 and #4.
Draw (write) a one sentence conclusion.
End with a “zinger” that makes the reader think or smile.
