Objectives:
• To explore the role of human activities in major issues facing the world’s oceans
• To compare the causes & impacts of two of the United States’ major oil spills
• To investigate different perspectives on proposed oil drilling the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR)
Step 1. Review your notes from our meeting on the oceans and coastal issues unit.
Step 2. Navigate to the LA Times “Altered Oceans” website:

Step 3. Click on Part One. Once you do so, you will need to then click on “The Tipping Point” video, which is the first video on the page, and watch all other videos on the page.
Step 4. Review the “slow suffocation” figure. Find on this link by clicking on the map

Step 5. After studying the “slow suffocation” figure, select “The Tipping Point” video from the videos sub-heading. Watch this video and take notes while you do so.
Step 6. Answer Question 1.
Step 7. Watch the video on “Dead Zones” on the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) website. Take notes.

Step 8. Conduct further research on the dead zone in the Gulf of Mexico. Locate information on the specific anthropogenic pollution that causes this particular dead zone.
