If this current electoral process tells us anything, it is that we are living in tumultuous and chaotic times. Threats of environmental and financial catastrophe stalk us daily in the news; and what it means to be “American” has never been more at issue, while we grapple with profound shifts in our cultural and social fabric. As dire as the times may seem, we’ve been here before. Specifically, the 1960’s saw people face many of the same issues, though with perhaps in a slightly different key. This quarter we’ve been looking at select movements from that era, working to get a sense for how folks living during that time grappled with their own shifting social and cultural landscape, in hopes that we might more fully understand our own. For your research paper, then, you will select one movement from those we’ve discussed in the course and connect that movement to a contemporary one. The topic is about women’s fight for equality to our contemporary debate for equal pay; or you may select one on condition of instructor approval. The point is for you to explore a contemporary social issue in light of its expression in the 1960’s. The essay itself should 1) explore both the historical and contemporary demonstrations of the issue, and 2) make some kind of claim or have some kind of stance on the issue itself (i.e. simply claiming that your issue was a thing in both the 60’s and today isn’t a bold enough thesis). The details of the essay are as follows: 2000-2500 words. A clear, compelling, and focused thesis statement, and be supported by well-researched claims. Well-researched claims in support of your thesis and scope. It should be easy to read and comprehend, be free of grammatical errors and typos, and possess smooth transitions and concise sentence structure. Offer both sides of the argument.
