Ergonomics and Human Factors

References are required to corroborate the points being made; these must be cited properly, using Harvard Referencing Style. Do not use the internet sites unless they are independent and authoritative. Do not use secondary internet sources. Specifically, do not use or cite from Wikipedia or internet sources that are secondary or derivative in nature, or that offer opinions, not facts. This suggests that you have poor research skills and that you do not understand the nature of objective, independent information. You will be severely penalized. In addition, do not cite from the Unit Guide.

Assessment 1:

Assignment – Short Report

Ergonomics and Human Factors Unit

Select a product or device that you are familiar with, e.g. a smartphone, the TV remote unit, a stove, the washing machine or the controls of your car.   The product or device doesn’t have to be complicated, it might be the car stereo, not the complete console.

a)    Under the following characteristic headings – physical, cognitive and environment – report on your experience of operating the product or device and how those characteristics impact on your experiences (8%).

b)   Consider and report on how that experience might be influenced if you were thirty years older (poorer eyesight, not as flexible, possible back or neck pain) and if the environmental conditions changed (e.g. low light, high background noise, demand for a rapid response) under which the product or device is operated (5%).

c)    Finally, recommend very briefly how the design could be improved to be consistent with the basic goal of ergonomics and human factors – human centred design.

Word Count: 1000

The report must be completed individually. It should be 1000 words long. As a guide to the word limit, words should be counted from the word “Introduction” at the top of page one to the word “References” at the last page (see below). You may be awarded less marks or in extreme cases, zero marks if you do not adhere to the word limit.
