Reflect Icon Reflect: Take time to reflect on writing as a process—how ideas develop through the use of language, and the changing of that language. Reflect on the differences between revising and editing as described in the textbook.>
Write Icon

Write: In your initial post for this discussion

Discuss the key differences between revising and editing.
Provide an example of what a writer does when revising, and what a writer does when editing.
Explain how much time you believe a writer should spend on each task and why.
Include a question you have about the content of the assigned reading for the week.

Your initial post must be 200 to 300 words

Prepare: As you prepare to write your second discussion for this Week, take a few moments to:

Review Chapter 9 of Essentials of College Writing.
Then, review the “Revision Checklist,” which will guide you through the process of reflecting on and revising your personal essay.

Reflect Icon Reflect: Reflect on the purpose of your essay. Think about changes that you might incorporate into your personal essay in order to better support your topic and purpose.
Write Icon Write: Revise your personal essay based on the “Revision Checklist.”

Please view the video Downloading a Document for guidance on accessing the “Introduction and Outline Worksheet.”

Post at least two pages of your revision and the checklist to the discussion board. Add a paragraph where you state:

The part of your essay you decided to revise.
How you revised it.
What techniques or methods from the required resources in this course you used to revise your essay (including Chapter 9 tips and techniques).

Discuss Icon Respond to Peers: Respond to at least two of your classmates. Respond to one classmate who used a different revision technique than you did and one who used a similar revision technique. In each response:

Compare the resources and techniques you used for revision to those your classmate used.
Make one concrete suggestion about how the revision sample can be further improved. Please do not comment on grammar or stylistics—just content.

Response posts must be 125 to 200 words in length

Continue writing your journal entries. This journal is designed to give you practice in academic writing, which is very different from the personal essay writing that you have been practicing. Academic writing entails making a point and supporting that point with information from a reputable source. There are three ways to support a point with information from a source: quoting, paraphrasing, or summarizing. This week, you will practice summarizing a source and citing that source in your journal entry. Please be sure to read and review the “Example Journal Entry – Summarizing” document, which shows how quotations can be integrated.

Note: The journal assignment should not be confused with a personal journal. This activity requires organization, effective stylistics and grammar, and proper source incorporation. It is not a free-writing or reflective writing exercise.

The personal essay we have read this week, “Consider the Lobster” uses narrative and/or descriptive elements (sections 6.3 and 6.4 in Essentials of College Writing), and each has a clear purpose.

Write about one of the essays assigned in this week’s readings. In 250 to 500 words

State the purpose of the essay.
Describe one descriptive writing pattern being used in the essay (refer to section 6.4 in Essentials of College Writing).
Explain why you think that descriptive writing pattern is used well by the writer. Incorporate a paraphrase from the essay and properly cite the essay.
Explain how you plan to use the same descriptive writing pattern in your personal essay.

As you are writing this journal entry, please pay attention to the areas that you struggled with in your “Grammar Assessment” quiz and “Practice Essay” assignment.
