Case Study
MK, an Inuit living in the Arctic region Inuit settlement of Point Hope, Alaska, has been diagnosed with an infection requiring antibiotic therapy. An oral antibiotic has been prescribed which must be taken at 12-hour intervals for seven (7) days. Inuit life must adapt to the extremes of summer and winter night lengths. In traditional Inuit society the healing of the sick is the responsibility of the shaman, who contacts spirits by singing, dancing, and drum beating. MK believes that people, community, nature, and spirituality are interconnected and interrelated. While MK seeks treatment for physical illnesses from Western medicine, she believes that illness is a result of disharmony with physical, spiritual, mental, and emotional health, thus seeking the healing powers of the shaman. MK may discontinue any Western medicine treatments once the physical symptoms disappear believing that harmony has been restored.
