The new Care Act (2014) introduces the ‘well-being principle’ to assessment of need and subsequent guidance states that councils must begin ‘with the assumption that the individual is best-placed to judge the individual’s wellbeing’ (Department of Health 2014b, section 1.13). Consider what approaches a social worker might use when assessing the needs of an adult service user with dementia?
