Consider the legal issues surrounding the renewal (or expiration) of the Indian Point power plant. There are more than policy concerns here. There are legal issues that relate to environmental, as well as financial, concerns. The financial and political aspects have to deal with the law. If the State fails to renew the license, that will have environmental consequences for sure. But what about the stockholders of Con Edison? What rights do they have? What standards must the state use to try to shut it down? And what will the power companies do to challenge the state? Millions of investors depend upon the power companies for their retirement and general income. What are their remedies? (Double spaced, 12 point Times New Roman font). The paper may use footnotes or end notes. You must cite your supporting cases/statutes.law review articles in general accord with “blue Book” form. Term Paper (Overview Intructions) A research paper will be required for completing the course. Students will be expected to write a 20 page paper (with title page, table of contents, bibliography and endnotes or footnotes, double space, no larger than 12 point font) dealing with a topic relating to emergency management law. Students will be expected to research cases, legal journals and reporters, as well as statutes. Students will be expected to properly cite these materials in their term paper. Citation format will be covered during the Lexis instruction lecture. The paper must include a legal question for which the student is expected to provide an answer or opinion. Students will be expected to use proper legal citation formats. The paper must not be a recitation or survey of laws. A cogent legal discussion on an important aspect of emergency management law is expected. Review the legal and environmental aspects of the renewal or expiration permit of the plant. What are the major issues concerning public health, drinking water, wildlife, applicable law fines, etc. Instruction for citations attached. It is bluebook format.
