Order Description

The concert review provides an opportunity for you to attend a performance that connects to the sounds we study or topics we discuss in class– a performance, for example, of “world music,” or one that raises questions of indigeneity, culture, ethnicity, geography, language, religious or political identity, etc. I suggest that you choose a performance of music with which you are not familiar–that forces you to confront novel habits of listening and educative sociocultural experiences. The essay you write about the concert should be between 4 to 5 double spaced pages. While the essay should display your best writing, you can approach the content and themes in any way you think appropriate. You can write as creatively as you choose. For example, you can discuss your individual experience–concentrating on understanding your presence within the musical scene or linking the sounds and sights with memories from your past or ideas from your imagination. Or, you can analyze the musical and social behaviors of the performers and audience. Similarly, you can draw connections between the concert and the themes we address in our class or your other academic courses. Use this assignment to express yourself freely.

Any kind of “WORLD MUSIC” concert is fine. (performance of American jazz and popular music, Broadway shows, and standard nightclub events are NOT ACCEPTABLE)
