Concept Map & Short Essays
The purpose of this assessment is to facilitate your understanding of the theoretical aspects of caring for acutely ill children using your reading resources and working in synergy with your learning guide. It is an expectation that you will reference your answers according to the College Student guide and General course regulations.

Assessment 3a: Concept map
Weighting 10%
Theme 5 considers the management issues of common cardiac disorders. In this assessment you are asked consider the condition of Dilated Cardiomyopathy (DCM) in children, and how all aspects of life will be affected for the child and family, by this illness.
You are required to develop and submit a multi-layered mind/concept map – refer to Appendix 1 of your Subject Information and Assessment booklet for directions..

There are websites that provide access to software programs specifically designed for developing Mind/Concept maps – some of these sites allow you to develop a map for free to trial the programs they have. These sites allow you to develop great maps and help you to add graphics and colour to your map. They also provide examples that will help you visualise your map. Use your search engine to find these sites using mind map or concept map as your search term.
There is no marking rubric for the concept map, your overall grade will be documented on the short essay rubric
Assessment 3b: Short Essays

Question 1 (1100 words)
On completion of Theme 6 you will be familiar with common neurological presentations in paediatrics. For this question you are asked to choose a neurological condition that may be appropriate to your context of nursing – for example; brain tumour (oncology), meningitis or hydrocephalus (general/ED), or acute head injury (PICU). These are just examples, discuss your choice with your tutor if you are unsure.
The purpose of this assessment is to give you the opportunity to explore an appropriate neurological case study, and demonstrate your understanding of the topics covered in theme 6.
You should consider the following points in your discussion;
Use current literature, including available clinical practice guidelines, to support your discussion.
Question 2 (900 words)
Subsequent to reading Theme 7 you would be aware that Diabetic Ketoacidosis (DKA) is an acute illness that occurs as a result of complex pathophysiology. The aim of the next short essay question is to explore features of this condition.
Progressive cerebral oedema is a significant complication of DKA in children, and may be related to fluid therapy, both fluid type and regime;
Serum potassium level may be normal in the child with DKA, while whole body potassium is depleted.
An Insulin infusion is an integral part of the treatment of DKA;
