Skill Teaching and Practice #2 for Year 5 & 6: Improvised Scenes
• Read about Improvised Scenes in the Introduction chapter of your textbook- note there is information in two places on pages 9-10 and pages 15-16. Also see the examples of improvised scenes in some of the textbook chapters.
Skill Teaching #2 (Year 5 & 6):
a) Write an explanation of what a rehearsed improvisation is and the difference between ‘rehearsed’ and ‘impromptu’ improvisation (ie, as you would say it to the children).
b) The teacher will choose a scene from the folk tale and organise the children into groups with all groups having the same number of children. Each group will prepare an improvisation of the chosen scene with movement and dialogue. Write what the teacher will say using the examples on pages 9 and 15 of the textbook (eg “Let’s see the scene where ….” ).
c) After the children have prepared and presented their scenes, the teacher then spotlights one group and initiates a reflective discussion by asking questions about the drama element of focus in relation to what this spotlighted group has done. Write two questions you would use to initiate and guide this reflective discussion.
