First thoughts
This book review centers its main argument on the American gun debate whose proponents view ownership of guns as right and whose opponents view the right to own guns as a myth. The article is important since it gives a background check of the Federal Gun Control Act of 1968 which became a guide for the gun control policy. He, however, notes that the there seems to be no further progress on the federal laws governing possession of guns. Squires gives an overview of the books content by highlighting the important background on the US gun problem, the current gun control measures and the obstacles that hinder the development of gun control policy in America. This book review offers a fascinating potential to inform the readers the core history of the problem of US Gun control although from his work, the reader is able to understand that the given essential background is not enough to give a full explanation of the gun control problem. He also makes it clear which chapters of the book are likely to raise alarm among the gun control lobbies.
Notes
“ In the first chapter he, analyzes the gun problem but only gives short explanations which are not completely convincing to any explanation that escalates the importance of firearms in sustaining the USA’s estimates of lethal violence” (p. 136).
“Taken together, two chapters will be sufficient to cause alarm in the gun control lobbies since one chapter portrays that having guns is not the problem but the problem lies with the people who have the guns and the second chapter indicating that some of the policies that are aiming at keeping bad people from guns was not politically achievable” (p. 136).
