To design and produce a website

Scenario

You have started a new job as a Trainee Web Developer. During your probationary period you will be tested to prove that you are good enough to be kept on. You have also been given a task to produce a website for a company that sells software online.

Task 1

Your line manager has given you the task to write a report on the following aspects of website technologies.

Outline the web architecture and components which enable internet and web functionality.

You will need to discuss detail the various stages and processes that information must pass through to get from server to screen. [P1]

When discussing website communications, describe in detail how information is moved around and shared. Make sure you refer to web 2.0, Online Applications and Cloud Computing. [M1]

Explain the role of the TCP/IP protocol and how it links to application layer protocols [D1]

Task 2

Explain the user side and server side factors that influence the performance of a website.
Explain the security risks and protection mechanisms involved in website performance.

Task 3
You have been given the task of designing a website for a software company called Softlite. The website will allow the company to sell its four software products, an antivirus called The Guardian, a graphics drawing tool called Construct, a database called Store and a compiler called Devsoft.

The website will have a home page that describes each of the products; a subscription page where users can enter their details to receive a newsletter; a sales page which allows a visitor to select products to buy followed by a message box showing a summary of the purchases with the total amount for the purchases.

The sales page should have validation to test when a visitor attempts to buy without selecting any item. You will use HTML, CSS and JavaScript to build the pages and your designs should include these elements.

Using appropriate design tools, design the interactive website to meet the clients need. [P4]

Explain the tools and techniques used in the creation of the interactive website.[M2]
Discuss the techniques that you have used and can be used on web pages to aid user access to information.[D2]

Task 4
Create the interactive website you designed previously to meet the clients need. [P5]

Give the website to three people to use and comment about its effectiveness. You should create a questionnaire for those reviewing your website.

Finally, demonstrate that your created website meets the defined requirements and achieves the purpose defined in the brief. [D3]
