BioMedical or Medical Ethics Dilemma

Ethics Research Paper Assignment – Option Two

Assignment Overview:  Students in the College of Medicine have the option to conduct in-depth research and to write a paper on an ethically relevant topic of their choice in lieu of the Unit-2 Exam. The paper is worth 20% of the total grade for the course (5% for the draft and 15% for the final version). The paper should demonstrate your overall ethics competence, your knowledge and understanding of the bioethics theories, principles, concepts and issues introduced in class; your ability to apply them to specific problems and dilemmas in your field, your critical thinking skills, and your ability to conduct independent research and analysis in health care ethics.

IMPORTANT: The length of the paper for Undergraduate should be 2,500 to 3,500 words. Graduate papers should be 3,500 – 4,000 words (double-spaced, justified, font size 12, not bold, not italicized). The paper must be proof-read. The style of citation to be used is APA (American Psychological Association). Using other formats will result in loss of points for the submission section of the paper grade. The paper must utilize thoroughly relevant sources from the course textbook (at least 3 separate cited references/mentions) with another 5-6 cited references from peer reviewed sources outside the textbook. According to APA, a cited reference means a separate and distinct source (an article, chapter or book). Your outside references should reflect scholarly (peer reviewed) research in subject matter journals and books. No Wiki!

A draft of the paper should be submitted for grading both electronically (via Blackboard) and as a hard copy  on March 4, 2015. The draft is worth 5% of your course grade. Indicate “DRAFT” after the title. Attach a copy of your SafeAssign report to your draft and make this information available to the faculty scoring your paper.

The revised and improved Final Ethics Paper worth 5% is due on April 15, 2015 by 7:00 PM. Indicate “FINAL PAPER” after the title. The final paper should be submitted for grading electronically (via Blackboard). It is worth 15% of the course grade. Late submissions of the Final version of the paper will not be accepted.

Students who submit fraudulent/plagiarized final papers will receive an automatic zero (0) for the submission and a failing grade for the course pending review by the appropriate discipline judiciary committee.  Further sanctions, including expulsion, may be levied by Howard University in accordance with applicable policies.

Acceptable Paper Topics:  This is a course in ETHICS. The paper must be a  discussion of  an ethical issue. Legal (jurisprudence) issues may be discussed to the extent they are ethically relevant but should not dominate the discussion.  When appropriate, you may compare and contrast the legal issues and offer an ethical solution to the dilemma, which may not agree with the law. In addition, the “science” discussion of a topic should not dominate; it should be minimal to clarify and support the ethical discussion.

Students have a great deal of latitude in choice of topics as long as it is an ethical issue in the health care setting and is discuss from the perspective of the student’s professions (i.e., how should the professional you wish to become respond to the issue you pose?). The range of appropriate topics includes: (1) the topics covered in the course textbook, (2) a topic that corresponds to your profession, (3) a recent issue that has risen to the national level of discussion, (4) a challenging moral dilemma in health care for which there are varying and distinct points of view on how to resolve it, or (5) a combination thereof.

A literature search will help students to understand the nature of the ethical issue at hand and to answer why people are unable to come to consensus on the issue (this is the background, the discussion of the problem section).
