Audience analysis.

Identifying your audience is critical when writing any kind of document; we never speak the same way to a professor as we do a parent, sibling, political official, or a child. Knowing your audience and their needs is critical in academic writing; it informs what you need to include in your paper, what you may need to be careful of, and what things you may not need to include.

For this exercise, think of your rhetorical analysis and answer the following questions:

  1. Who is your audience for this paper? Professionals in the field? The layperson? The academic community?
  1. How much would you expect your audience to know about your topic?
  1. What information will your audience definitely not know about your topic?
  1. Do you think your audience will agree with you? Disagree? Will they be indifferent? Will you need to be convincing at any point, and why?
