Assessment Specification
You are required to write an essay of max 4,000 words (excluding submission documents, references and appendices).
You are free to choose the subject and title of your essay. It can be the same topic as your group presentation. The essay should cover the following:
1. Describe a global health issue. You should mention how severe is this problem (e.g. what is its global burden, prevalence, mortality rates) and who is affected by it.
2. Discuss the wider socio-economic and political dimensions of your global health issue. This should include the interactions between the local (micro) and global (macro) factors, focusing on the wider determinants of the global health issue. You should also identify the actors/stakeholders involved and discuss their role in improving (or worsening) the problem.
3. Draw relevant conclusions and suggest solutions and recommendations for future policy, practice or research.
Regardless of the topic chosen, you should:
 Focus on a specific global health issue which would allow you to make comparisons across countries/regions with different socio-economic, demographic and health-related characteristics.
 Identify and apply relevant frameworks, theories and models. A Framework can be particularly useful in presenting the determinants of the global health issue. Use topics covered in the lectures like global burden of diseases, demographic/epidemiological transitions, population pyramids, MDGs/SDGs.
 Draw widely on relevant literature, evidence and data. Rely more on academic literature and avoid too many citations from websites/Wikipedia.
 Adopt an analytical and critical approach throughout.
