Analysis of Lucy character from the novel Disgrace by J. M. Coetzee

literary essay on Disgrace by J. M. Coetzee

Topic: Analysis of Lucy character from the novel Disgrace by J. M. Coetzee

Thesis statement: Lucy becomes a priority to her father, David Lurie, to protect as she manages to deal with her inner problems after being victim of rape plus south Africa harsh sense of sexism. I chose this topic because it embodies what i caught my attention the most throughout the novel. The way Lucy acts after being violated is one that is not seen in other females/ males who go through the same trauma. She does not make herself a victim simply because of cultural ethics in which women are treated equally as slaves. Lucy knows if she does stand up for her dignity through the legal system it will resolve nothing. Only by obtaining a male dominant figure, a master, she will be seen as someones property and decrease the likelihood of being disturbed once more.
