Introduction
What are the various components that influence airline scheduling? What sort of

research goes into determining flight frequency or deciding which aircraft to use?

What sources provide the best information? These are just some of the questions

faced when airlines create their schedules. The scheduling freedom provided to the

airlines as a result of deregulation allowed for more competition in the market,

but there are other factors that must be considered apart from making a profit.

Does customer satisfaction trump all other factors? Is it more important to

maintain a strict maintenance schedule than provide customer satisfaction? Does the

cost of each flight hold more sway than the terminal space available at a large

airport?

•    Crews – certain crew routing must be followed to maintain efficient monthly

utilization.
•    Facilities – gate space on airport ramps must be adequate.
•    Marketing Factors – time zones, market size, trip length, and the proximity

of the airport to the market served are all marketing factors to be considered.
•    Other Factors – anticipated delays, changes in wind patterns from winter to

summer, or year-round schedules where wind variations are negligible.
