Temperament

What does this term mean when talking about children?

Temperament is a term child development specialists use to describe inborn characteristics of children. These characteristics include nine traits:

1. Activity level – some have boundless energy while other children display low activity levels.

2. Biological Rhythms – are the times a child eats, sleeps and toilets regular or irregular?

3. Approach/withdrawal – does the child seek out people and new things, or pull back?

4. Mood – these can be positive, negative or even vary in how often a child shifts moods.

5. Intensity of Reaction – does the child show joy or displeasure intensely or only mildly?

6. Sensitivity – this varies for children in their response to light, noise, touch and internal discomfort.

7. Adaptability – is the child able to change quickly to a new routine, or does it take a longer time to adjust?

8. Distractibility – does the child stay focused on one thing even with many distractions in the room?

9. Persistence – some children give up easily when frustrated while others stick with challenging tasks.

These nine traits are then grouped into three basic temperamental types: Flexible (or easy), Fearful (or cautious) and Feisty (or active).

Flexible children (about 40% of all children) tend to have regular biological rhythms, positive mood, adaptability, low intensity and low sensitivity.

Fearful children (15%) adapt slowly to new situations and withdraw.

Feisty children (10%) are active, intense, distractible, sensitive, irregular and moody.

I found a great resource for this topic at the following link. Take a look through all 11 links on that page to gain a better understanding of temperament.

I am presenting the concept of temperament at this point in our course because I want you to remember that as much influence the socialization agents put on a child, the child”s temperament will influence how the socialization will impact them. It is almost like looking at socialization as outside influences trying to shape the child, and temperament is influences which are internal.

The forum will have a discussion question about temperament for you this week.
