CM 400 – Risk Management & Construction Safety

Construction Management Program

Course Description:  Causes and effects of risk loss in construction and methods of minimizing risk with effective management strategies.  What is construction safety and why we need to effectively manage it.
Prerequisites:  Senior standing
Textbook Required: Essentials of Safety Trainee Workbook for Construction and Code of Federal Regulations, Part 1926 Construction Industry
Textbook Recommended:  Essentials of Safety Construction Training and Reference Guide

The graduated percentage breakdown for the final grade will be the following:  93-100%, A; 85-92%, B; 84-77%, C; 70-76%, D: 69% and below, F.
Dishonesty in homework, quizzes or exams will be handled as outlined in the Academic Honesty Policy.  Exam or quiz answers that are copied from another student will receive zeros
Make Up Policy:  Make up exams are entitled due to official off-campus trips.  A documented request must be submitted with sufficient notice prior to missing an exam.  Missing an exam due to an emergency medical problem or special circumstances will require a statement from a medical professional.  Instructor discretion will determine whether a quiz and homework may be made up.  All assignments must be turned in by the designated time.  One letter grade will be deducted for each day the assignment is late.
Freedom in Learning:   Under Board of Regents and University policy, student academic performance may be evaluated solely on an academic basis, not on opinions or conduct in matters unrelated to academic standards.  Students should be free to take reasoned exception to the data or views offered in any coarse of study and to reserve judgment about matters of opinion, but they are responsible for learning the content of any course of study for which they are enrolled.  A student who believes that an academic evaluation reflects prejudiced or capricious consideration of student opinions or conduct unrelated to academic standards should first contact the instructor of the course to initiate a review of the evaluation.  If the student remains unsatisfied, the student may contact the department head and /or dean of the college which offers the class to initiate a review of the evaluation.

CM 400 Assignments

Job Hazard Analysis:  Select an activity relating to construction, analyze the job, put the analysis in written format that matches one of the generally accepted styles, and make a presentation in class. Placed in D2L Drop Box

Safety Plan: Each student will submit an effective safety plan.

Safety Presentation:  Each group shall present an hour long safety meeting. The meeting shall be on one of the major class topics. The Power Point and or other documentation of the presentation is due in the D2L drop box the day of the presentation. The presentation shall be 10 minutes per person, a two person group shall have a presentation a minimum of 20 minutes. Videos may be included in the presentation but be limited to half of the total presentation time.

Class assignments: Each person will be present a short tip of the day and summary of a new article during the week.

Final Project:  Safety Portfolio shall consist of two illustrations (original photographs) of safety violations for each subpart in OSHA 1926 regulations. Each illustration shall have a caption explaining the OSHA violation, and site the specific OSHA regulation. The subparts include: C, D, E, F, H, J, K, L, M, P, X, and (O, W, G). only two pictures are required for O, W, and G.

•    These presentation assignments must be presented in class on the selected date and time.  Also a document for each presentation must be submitted in D2L the day the assignment/s are made in class.
