Tactical Urbanism: Short Term Action, Long Term Change”

1. Read the article titled “Tactical Urbanism: Short Term Action, Long Term Change” posted on Moodle under the section “Writing Assignment for GEOG 470”. During the quarter we simply did not have time to look at micro-scale urban geography. This reading examines things at that scale. 2. Write a review of the article with at least 1,000 words. For most people this will only be 4 pages, or maybe slightly more, which is especially little considering this is a 400 level course. You will also come up with an original idea of tactical urbanism for your city/town and write 300 words about it. The total word count should then be no less than 1,300 words. READ AND FOLLOW ALL DIRECTIONS IN THE WRITING ASSIGNMENT INSTRUCTIONS BELOW.  Your writing assignment is to review the article by discussing the authors’ main points, what they are trying to accomplish with tactical urbanism in both the short- and longterm, and what is behind the “tactical” part of the title as it applies to the author’s goals. A simple summary of the article would earn a “C” by showing a lack of critical thinking. Try to be thoughtful and creative in your review. Consider how these ideas would work where you live. What type of urban areas would these ideas work best, and what type of urban areas would these ideas not work very well?  You will also have to come up with an idea that fits the author’s concepts of “tactical urbanism” for the city/town where you live. Discuss your idea and how it fits the authors’ ideas of tactical urbanism, as well as how it will improve your city/town.  USE THE TIMES NEW ROMAN FONT IN YOUR PAPER. It is much easier to read than other fonts, especially when it comes to grading lots of papers. This font is Times New Roman. Font size 12 is best. Do not use bold, underline, or all capital letters, just regular Times New Roman size 12 font.  LENGTH – a minimum of 1,000 words (not counting title and your name) for the review section.
