An educational psychologist is interested in differences in University achievement for mature and ‘traditional age’, male and female students. She randomly samples final year students, on various courses at her University, and administers a questionnaire which aims to measure aspects of the students’ experience, but more importantly, she asks questions about their self-reported marks on coursework and exams. She uses these responses to calculate an overall mean for self-reported marks at University (from 1 being an overall Fail to 5 being an overall First). The researcher hypothesises that Mature Male students will be the highest achievers, and Traditional Female students the lowest.
